Etsy makes sellers show one unedited photo of the real item
New AI rules ban bot-made listings and AI-written patterns and recipes, while AI images may stay as extras if they match what the buyer receives.
Etsy has tightened the rules on AI in its shop listings. In a post on 22 October 2026, the marketplace said sellers must include a plain, untouched photo of the item itself, shot in a real setting, PPC Land reports. Retail Dive says the requirement covers most listings.
Generated or edited images can still sit beside it, as long as they match what arrives in the buyer’s hands, and sellers must still disclose AI used to make an item. Two things are now off limits: listings created by bots with no human hand, which Etsy says it removes, and AI-written patterns, recipes and other how-to guides, whose listings must also show something actually made from them.
Buyers carry part of the enforcement. If a buyer reports that an item differs materially from a listing that ignored the photo rule, the seller may have to fund the refund, Retail Dive reports. Sellers now see a warning in the listing form when Etsy’s detection spots a likely AI image. Etsy’s vice president of customer operations, James Ossman, called the changes “our starting point, not the finish line”.
The AI tools on our product photography list stay usable for those extra images. Photoroom’s Pro plan, for example, costs $12.99 a month for 1,000 exports, about $0.013 an image, on our 25 October 2026 price check.
For a shop built on AI imagery, most products now cost one real photograph of the real item, the single image no generator on that list can supply, and skipping it exposes the seller to refunds when an item turns out materially different from its listing.
