AI labs rehearse the political fallout of an AI disaster
Executives at Anthropic, OpenAI and other firms are planning for the backlash after a major AI-driven cyberattack, Axios reports.
According to Axios on Friday 9 October 2026, leaders at Anthropic, OpenAI and their rivals are quietly preparing for the political storm that would follow an AI-caused disaster, Decrypt reports. Top of their list is a cyberattack big enough to knock out banks, the internet, electricity or water supplies. Some people in the industry put such an event six to 12 months away.
Containing the attack is only half of the exercise. Executives expect such an event to bring fast demands for tough rules, International Business Times reports; they want to shape the laws reached for afterwards, according to Decrypt. The planners also war-game an AI agent breaking out of its sandbox, and criminals turning off-the-shelf models into weapons.
Part of the plan is to brief members of Congress quickly after an incident, Decrypt reports. The planners assume Democrats gain ground after the 3 November midterms and move to curb AI. OpenAI said its preparedness drills explore possible events rather than predictions; Anthropic declined to comment.
For businesses built on these models, the planning names the risk plainly: the first major incident could change the rules on frontier AI for every customer of every lab.
