Anthropic releases Claude Sonnet 5.5 at Sonnet 5’s price
The mid-tier model runs over 30 per cent faster and, Anthropic says, costs up to 30 per cent less per task at $2 and $10 per million tokens.
Anthropic released Claude Sonnet 5.5 on Monday 28 September 2026 at Sonnet 5’s token prices. Input costs $2 per million tokens and output $10, its launch page shows. Output is over 30 per cent faster. Anthropic puts the saving at up to 30 per cent per task, because the model spends fewer tokens.
By Anthropic’s own scores, Sonnet 5.5 reaches 70.6 per cent on Terminal-Bench 4.0, a benchmark of coding tasks carried out in a computer terminal. On the GDPval-AA knowledge-work index it scores 1,844, two points below the larger Opus 5.5, VentureBeat reports. It runs in the Claude apps and on AWS, Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure.
Launch customers gave their own figures. Box says work finishes 2.4 times faster, and Lovable counts a third fewer tool calls on coding jobs, VentureBeat adds.
Sonnet 5.5 is also the first Sonnet held to the same cybersecurity safeguards as Anthropic’s Opus models, TechCrunch reports. Anthropic says a new Haiku model follows within weeks.
For teams billed by the token, the rate card stays put. Each job uses fewer tokens, so a fixed budget now covers more work than it did on Sonnet 5.
