Chip stocks slide after Broadcom chief likens AI bets to a casino
Hock Tan said many AI investors do not know what they are buying, and AI chip and optical stocks fell the same day.
Broadcom chief executive Hock Tan told a conference in Singapore on Monday 12 October 2026 that many AI investors treat the market like a casino, Bloomberg reported. “A lot of investors have no clue what they are investing in,” he said.
The remark stands out because Broadcom is one of the boom’s biggest winners. It designs custom AI chips for OpenAI and Anthropic, and Tan forecasts its yearly AI chip revenue rising from about $58 billion this fiscal year to $230 billion in fiscal 2028. He likened companies’ AI experiments to a child who burns through arcade tokens and learns nothing. Money to pay for the build-out, he said, is a bigger risk to the industry than memory chips.
AI hardware stocks fell the same day. Optical parts maker Lumentum lost 9.8 per cent and Broadcom itself about 2 per cent, The Motley Fool reports, linking the slide to Tan’s comments.
Traders linked the slide to a warning from one of the boom’s biggest suppliers, a sign of how much AI spending now rests on investor confidence.
