Gemini passes a billion users and now edits Docs in the chat
Google’s assistant app reached one billion users, and every Gemini user can now create and edit Docs, Sheets, slides and PDFs without leaving it.
The Gemini app now has one billion users, Sundar Pichai said on Alphabet’s earnings call on 28 October 2026, adding that no Google product has grown faster (Pichai’s remarks). A year ago the app had 650 million monthly users, PPC Land notes, and companies building on Google’s models now send it nearly 32 billion tokens a minute, tokens being the chunks of text a model reads and writes.
A day later Google widened what those users can do. Files the chat produces, from Docs, Sheets and slide decks to PDFs, Markdown, plain text and code, can now be opened, checked and changed without leaving Gemini, The Verge reports. Google’s example: select a table in full-screen view and ask Gemini to turn it into a chart. Every Gemini user has it from day one, with all formats on the web and, for now, only PDFs on mobile. Until now, changing a file Gemini had made meant downloading it or moving to an app such as Docs and its own Gemini bar.
Our 29 October price check lists four Google AI plans. Free costs nothing, AI Plus $4.99 a month and AI Pro $19.99, and the AI Pro card is the one that names “Gemini in Gmail and Docs”.
That puts a first draft of a campaign brief or a product sheet, written and edited inside the Gemini chat, within reach of the Free plan, while having Gemini work on the same file from inside Docs is what the $19.99 AI Pro card lists.
