Meta and Microsoft cut staff use of Claude
Two of Anthropic’s largest corporate customers are steering employees towards their own AI tools, The Information reports.
Meta and Microsoft, two of Anthropic’s biggest corporate customers, are working to reduce how much their own employees use Claude, The Information reported on Monday 5 October 2026. Its headline puts Microsoft’s cut to internal Claude spending at a third.
At Meta, the number of employees using Claude Code has fallen to about 30,000 from about 60,000 earlier this year, according to PYMNTS, which summarises the report. Meta had been on course to spend billions of dollars this year on internal AI tools, with Claude Code the most used. Meta did not comment to either outlet.
Microsoft’s cut covers Claude Code, the Claude models inside Copilot and Claude Mythos, PYMNTS reports. A Microsoft spokesperson told The Information the company is pointing staff to its own GitHub Copilot, while engineers can still pick other models. PYMNTS adds that Microsoft had projected $1 billion of internal spending on Anthropic’s tools.
Both companies sell their own AI products, so internal use is also a shop window. For Anthropic, the change hits coding seats that large employers buy for their own engineers, a use both companies now want to keep in-house.
