Meta releases Muse Spark Open, an AI model that works on Macs

Meta worked with Apple so the open model runs on two to four linked Mac Studios, and says it is the strongest open model made in the US.

Meta released Muse Spark Open on Thursday 15 October 2026, a large AI model whose files anyone can download and run on their own machines, the company says on its research blog. Meta calls it the most capable open model built in the US. Open means the trained model itself is public, so you can run it and adapt it without paying for each request.

The model holds 816 billion parameters, the values it learned in training, and uses 42 billion of them for each word it writes. Meta calls it natively multimodal, able to take in more than text, and it can keep about a million tokens in view at once. Meta built it for coding and for agents that work through long, multi-step jobs. Its licence allows limited commercial use.

Apple is the surprise partner. The two companies worked together for months so the model runs on two to four linked Mac Studios with the M5 Ultra chip, CNBC reports. A Mac Studio with that chip and 256GB of memory starts at $10,799. The two firms fell out after Apple’s 2021 privacy changes cut how precisely advertisers could target people, CNBC notes.

In Meta’s own trial, the model ran the DaVinci Resolve video editor by itself, watching each frame to pick the best moments and cropping them to vertical clips. For video and creative teams, Meta’s trial suggests that kind of work can run on a desk, with the footage kept in the room.
