New Performance Max campaigns pull images from your site

From 4 December, image extraction is on by default in new campaigns, even where an advertiser switched dynamic images off for the whole account.

Google is changing a default in Performance Max, the campaign type where its AI chooses ads, placements and assets across Google. From 4 December 2026, every newly created Performance Max campaign starts with image extraction switched on, Google said in a post on the Google Ads Developer Blog on Wednesday 21 October 2026.

With image extraction on, Google takes pictures from the pages your ads link to and uses them in the ads; Google asks advertisers to confirm they hold the rights to every image on those pages. Today the account switch rules: turn dynamic images off for the account, and a new campaign with no setting of its own stays off. For campaigns created from 4 December, that account switch no longer decides; each one needs its own opt-out, PPC Land reports.

The rule covers the Google Ads interface, Google Ads Editor and the API alike, so agencies whose software builds campaigns automatically have to send that opt-out in every new campaign themselves.

It arrives in the same week as Meta’s new terms on AI ad edits. Our guide to AI ad disclosure rules sets out what each platform asks you to label when AI shapes an ad.

From 4 December an account-wide off stops protecting you: a campaign your agency’s software creates takes pictures from your landing pages unless that software sends the opt-out.
