Reddit ends RSS feeds and public API access over AI scraping
RSS feeds go dark on 13 November and open API access ends in March 2027, as Reddit steers AI firms towards paid data deals.
Reddit announced on Wednesday 30 September 2026 that it switches off RSS feeds on 13 November and ends public API access in March 2027, TechCrunch reports. In posts to moderators and developers, the company called RSS a “common surface for large-scale scraping and automated abuse”.
The timetable runs in steps. Reddit stops taking new public API requests on 31 October, and apps and bots that are not registered by 12 January 2027 start losing access, MediaNama reports. Developers who move to Reddit’s own Devvit platform get $1,000 migration payments and free hosting, and more than 14,000 apps have registered so far.
Moderators who rely on RSS alerts are pointed to a Discord Relay app. Old Reddit, the classic interface, is limited to logged-in users who have used it in the past six months, with moderators exempt, 9to5Mac reports.
Data deals pay. Reddit’s other revenue, mostly AI data licensing, rose 24% year on year to $43 million in the second quarter, per TechCrunch’s figures.
For marketers who monitor brand mentions or community threads through RSS or free API tools, those workflows stop on Reddit’s dates. Social listening on Reddit now runs through registered apps or paid data access.
