Replit makes OpenAI its default model over Anthropic
The app-building platform’s chief executive cites cost and results; customers can still choose Claude, and a source says the Anthropic deal stands.
Replit, the browser-based platform where people build apps by describing them, has made OpenAI’s models its default in place of Anthropic’s. Chief executive Amjad Masad spoke on stage at TechCrunch Disrupt on Thursday 15 October 2026. He said Replit no longer works with Anthropic, pointing to cost, the partnership and performance, TechCrunch reports.
He narrowed that afterwards. Customers can still choose Anthropic’s Claude models, Masad told TechCrunch, while OpenAI is now the preferred partner behind Replit Agent. Since most users never change the default, Replit’s Anthropic bill could shrink sharply, TechCrunch notes. A person familiar with the matter told TechCrunch the Anthropic partnership remains in place.
On stage, Masad said Replit’s own benchmark favours OpenAI’s Sol and Astra when an app is built from nothing, Unite.AI reports from the session recording. He also said Replit had been among Anthropic’s five largest customers. Replit announced its OpenAI partnership in August 2026.
One large customer can move its default model in a quarter when price and results shift. If you build on one lab’s models, keep your prompts portable enough to switch.
