Shopify has opened the checkout on its merchants’ storefronts to AI agents that run in a shopper’s browser. The company announced the change on Monday 28 September 2026. It is rolling out to all eligible merchants, TechCrunch reports.

Agents now read an order with get_checkout, edit its address or shipping choice with update_checkout and submit it, Shop Pay included, with complete_checkout. Each order waits for the buyer’s approval, so agents stop screenshotting or scraping pages.

Until now, agents stopped short of payment. Shopify switched on WebMCP tools for every Liquid storefront on 21 August, its developer changelog shows. They let an agent search, fill a cart and move to checkout. The shopper then took over.

Shopify also has direct commerce partnerships with Meta’s Muse and the Instinct agent, The Paypers reports. Amazon and Adidas block such agents from buying on their own sites.

For Shopify merchants, an agent can now carry a sale to a paid order while the buyer only approves it. The product data, shipping rules and prices it reads decide what it buys.
