AI companies apply for .agent and .agi web domains
ICANN received 1,615 applications for new domain endings; ten companies, Meta and OpenAI among them, want .agent.
ICANN, the body that runs internet naming, published 1,615 applications for new top-level domains from 481 applicants on Wednesday 7 October 2026, and AI runs through the list, The Verge reports. Ten companies, Meta and OpenAI among them, applied for .agent. Seven, including OpenAI, want .agi, six want .asi and four want .intelligence.
The labs also filed for their own names. OpenAI applied for 15 endings in all, including .chatgpt, .codex and .openai, and Meta for 21, including .superintelligence. Anthropic applied for two: .anthropic and .claude. Google filed for more than 30, including .api, .mcp and .agent, TechRadar reports.
North American organisations sent 864 applications and European ones 506, TechRadar reports, citing ICANN. Its chief executive, Kurtis Lindqvist, described the applications as a sign of how organisations want to establish trust online.
The process is long. Nothing becomes official before next year, The Verge says, and ICANN holds a draw in the first half of 2027 to set the order in which applications are processed, TechRadar says, so none goes live before the second half of that year.
Brands building agent products have no say yet over who runs .agent or .agi, or on what terms; that waits on ICANN’s process.
