Anthropic gives US governments 40 per cent off Claude
A new deal with the General Services Administration cuts Claude’s metered price for federal, state and local agencies, with no minimum spend.
From 27 October 2026, US government bodies can buy Claude at 40 per cent off, Anthropic says. The deal with the General Services Administration (GSA), the agency that buys for the federal government, covers Claude Enterprise, Claude for Government and the Claude API, Anthropic said on 27 October 2026. For the first time the discount covers every way of buying: direct purchases from that day, and purchases through cloud providers later, and it extends to state, local, tribal and territorial governments. Anthropic puts the savings at $1 billion. There is no minimum purchase: an agency’s bill follows its actual use.
The new terms replace a $1-per-user offer that runs out on 31 October, Nextgov reports. OpenAI’s own GSA deal, live since early October, takes 50 per cent off its per-token prices. FedScoop adds that Gartner says per-token bills are hard to forecast, and that Forrester’s Tracy Woo warns a handful of heavy users can account for far more than their share of the spend. Anthropic says about 500 US government organisations use Claude.
The discount covers metered and enterprise products. The plans an ad team buys are fixed: our 27 October check has Claude Pro at $20 a month, or $17 billed yearly, and a Team seat at $25, or $20 billed yearly.
Agencies get 40 per cent off a bill that grows with every token used, and Forrester’s power-user warning applies to them for the same reason it does not apply to a $25 Team seat: only the metered bill grows with the heaviest user.
