Cloudflare opens a beta that charges AI agents in stablecoins
Sites behind Cloudflare can bill AI agents per request in USDC through a new gateway, now in closed beta in the US.
Cloudflare opened its agent payment gateway, which it calls the “Monetization Gateway”, to a closed beta for eligible US buyers and sellers on Wednesday 30 September 2026, Fortune reports. The gateway lets a business charge AI agents for what they fetch, paid in USDC, Circle’s dollar-backed stablecoin.
It runs on x402, an open payment protocol from Coinbase. When an agent requests a paid page, dataset, API or tool, the server answers with a price. The agent pays inside the request and gets the resource. Funds settle on Coinbase’s Base network straight to the seller’s wallet. The buyer needs no account, card or subscription, Fortune reports, and Cloudflare’s blog sets out the price-then-pay exchange.
Cloudflare first described the gateway and opened a waitlist on 1 July, its blog shows. Product manager Rohin Lohe told Fortune that Cloudflare plans to add users through the rest of the year and to make it widely available by early 2027.
For publishers and data owners, this gives a billing route for agent traffic that today reads pages for free. For teams building agents, every site that switches it on answers with a price before it hands over content.
