Epic releases a games launcher written by AI agents
Epic says AI agents wrote and checked the code for its rebuilt PC launcher, now in preview on Windows, Mac and, for the first time, Linux.
Epic Games released a preview of its new PC games launcher on Wednesday 14 October 2026 and said AI built it, The Verge reports. Epic calls the method “vibe coding”: people describe what they want in plain words and AI writes the software. Martin Keely, who runs the Epic Games Store, told The Verge that AI agents wrote and checked all of the code while his team supervised.
A launcher is the app players use to buy, download and open their games. Epic rebuilt this one from scratch. Epic puts its cold start at 5.47 seconds and says that beats Steam by 46 per cent, IGN reports. Keely told IGN the game library loads 30 times faster than in the old version. The preview runs on Windows and Mac, and on Linux for the first time, while the old launcher stays available.
The release lands in the same week chief executive Tim Sweeney announced a major pivot to retool the company around AI, The Verge adds. Keely says the launcher team started its approach before that announcement.
For any business weighing AI coding tools, Epic now runs a customer-facing app whose code, it says, its agents wrote under human supervision.
