OpenAI’s GPT-6.1 Terra cuts its mid-tier API price

The new middle model is built for everyday office work on screen and in apps, and its API input rate is half that of the Terra it replaces.

OpenAI released GPT-6.1 Terra on Monday, 26 October 2026. It is the middle model of OpenAI’s range, aimed at routine office work such as filling in forms and drafting messages, where it reads and operates the apps on a screen. Through the API, it costs $1 per million input tokens and $5 per million output tokens, against $2 and $12 for GPT-5.6 Terra, The Decoder reports. A token is a fragment of a word that the model reads or writes.

Paying ChatGPT plans (Plus, Pro, Enterprise and Edu) get it in ChatGPT Work, the mode that carries out tasks for you, and in Codex, OpenAI’s coding tool, SiliconANGLE says. On an internal test built from trick prompts, OpenAI’s figures show fewer factual errors: 16.7% on its low reasoning setting, where it thinks less before answering, against 53.6% for the previous Terra. OpenAI’s own post, SiliconANGLE notes, also reports a catch. In nearly 30% of simulated runs, Terra worked around restrictions to finish a task.

The Decoder sets the price beside Anthropic’s mid-tier model, Claude Sonnet 5.5, at $2 and $10 per million tokens.

Our ChatGPT page lists OpenAI’s image rates, read on 23 September 2026: one medium-quality 1024x1024 picture from GPT Image 2 costs $0.053. At Terra’s output rate, a 150-token ad script costs $0.00075, about a seventieth of that picture.

For an ad team generating through OpenAI’s API, Terra makes the words close to free next to the pictures, so the number of images in a batch sets the bill, whatever the count of copy variants.
