ChatGPT image generator for ads (GPT Image)
Verdict on ChatGPT (GPT Image)
Use ChatGPT for statics that match the hooks you already write there, and the API for a price per image. On the API, a medium-quality GPT Image 2 square costs $0.053 (OpenAI guide, checked ); the plan cards name no image count.
Seven of 34 user sources report edits that change what should stay, and OpenAI asks that images posted to social media be marked AI-generated.

What ChatGPT’s image generator makes for ads
ChatGPT makes and edits images with OpenAI’s GPT Image models, in the same chat that writes your hooks and copy. Users paste a product link or photo, or point it at a reference ad, then ask for edits in plain words. For hooks and scripts across tools, see AI ad copy generators.
On the API, OpenAI’s image guide leads with two newer models, GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst and Flare, released on 8 September 2026 (changelog). It positions Sunburst “for workflows where editing precision matters most” and Flare “for fast, high-quality everyday image generation”.
Feed 4:5 and Stories 9:16 both fit. GPT Image 2 takes any ratio from 1:3 to 3:1, with both edges multiples of 16. Sizes run to 3840 pixels on the long edge and 8,294,400 pixels in all. OpenAI calls Sunburst and Flare resolutions above 2560x1440 experimental.
GPT Image 2 offers transparent backgrounds for product cut-outs on the API, in preview since 20 August 2026 (changelog). The guide lists them for Sunburst and Flare too.
OpenAI’s limits list says the model “can still struggle with precise text placement and clarity” and “may occasionally struggle to maintain visual consistency for recurring characters or brand elements across multiple generations”.
What a ChatGPT ad image costs
A ChatGPT ad image has a published price only on the API. The quality setting moves it most: a GPT Image 2 square at high costs 35 times one at low (OpenAI guide).
The GPT Image 2 portrait (1024x1536) costs less than its square at every quality: $0.041 against $0.053 at medium. OpenAI’s guide says “A larger non-square resolution can sometimes produce fewer output tokens than a smaller or square resolution at the same quality setting.”
| Quality | GPT Image 2, 1024x1024 (USD) | GPT Image 2, 1024x1536 (USD) | GPT Image 1.5, 1024x1024 (USD) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Low | $0.006 | $0.005 | $0.009 |
| Medium | $0.053 | $0.041 | $0.034 |
| High | $0.211 | $0.165 | $0.133 |

Prompt text and input images bill on top. Editing a product photo uses more input tokens than a text-only prompt, since gpt-image-2 “processes every image input at high fidelity automatically”. The Batch API halves every token price (API pricing).
GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst and Flare bill image output at the same rate per million tokens as GPT Image 2. OpenAI publishes no per-image table for them, only a calculator, and says the models “can use different token counts for the same quality setting”.
The ChatGPT plan cards name no image count, so no plan has a cost per image.
| Plan | Image line on the card | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Free | “Limited and slower image generation” | Free |
| Go | “More image creation” | Unverified |
| Plus | “More complex and accurate image creation” | Unverified |
| Pro | “Unlimited and faster image creation”, “Unlimited subject to abuse guardrails” | Unverified |

The archived pricing page names no trial, so the ways in are the Free plan and the API. At list price, OpenAI’s table starts GPT Image 2 at $0.005, for a 1024x1536 portrait at low. Every plan sits beside its rivals in the AI ad tool price tracker.
Can you run ChatGPT images in ads?
Yes: ChatGPT images can run in ads, with conditions. OpenAI’s Terms of Use (effective 1 January 2026, archived copy) say you “own the Output” and assign you “all our right, title, and interest, if any, in and to Output”. The AI commercial use matrix reads paid ads Allowed with conditions on Free, Go, Plus, Pro and the API.
The same terms add that output “may not be unique and other users may receive similar output”, and bar you from presenting it as “human-generated when it was not”.
The Terms of Use also make the Sharing and publication policy binding. Its social media section (updated 14 November 2022) asks you to “Manually review each generation before sharing or while streaming” and “Attribute the content to your name or your company”.
The third condition is the AI label: “Indicate that the content is AI-generated in a way no user could reasonably miss or misunderstand.” The policy does not say whether a paid ad counts as a post.
API, Business and Enterprise customers sign the Services Agreement instead, with the same ownership in 4.1 and the same policy among its “OpenAI Policies”. Section 1 of the Service terms adds an indemnity against IP claims over API output. Section 2 excludes preview features from it, transparent backgrounds on GPT Image 2 among them.
OpenAI’s provenance guide describes a check for C2PA Content Credentials and a SynthID watermark. It warns that “Editing, converting, or sharing a file can remove its metadata” and that “Not all OpenAI-generated content contains a supported signal.”
Meta’s update of 1 June 2026 says it “will also begin automatically detecting ads created or edited using third-party AI tools through industry-standard signals” and, when it detects one, apply an “AI info” label in About this ad. More in Meta’s AI disclosure rules and AI ad disclosure rules.
UGC-style people and the likeness rules
A UGC-style ChatGPT image built from a real person’s photo needs that person’s express consent and all necessary rights. Section 6 of OpenAI’s Service terms (updated 21 September 2026), which covers image and video inputs: “You may not use Visual Capabilities to reproduce the likeness of any person without express consent and all necessary rights.”
For prompts alone, the Usage policies (effective 29 October 2025) bar “use of someone’s likeness, including their photorealistic image or voice, without their consent in ways that could confuse authenticity”. Neither clause has a separate rule for your own face or for an invented person.
Six of 34 sources say images look AI-made without careful prompting, fake-looking people in UGC shots among them (Reddit, Reddit).
Training on your prompts and images
OpenAI can train its models on what you put into ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus or Pro unless you opt out. The Terms of Use: “If you do not want us to use your Content to train our models, you can opt out”.
The API and the Business and Enterprise plans start from the other side: “OpenAI will not use Customer Content to develop or improve the Services, unless Customer explicitly agrees to such use” (Services Agreement 4.2). For photos of an unreleased product, that difference decides the route.
What 34 user sources report about ChatGPT images
Our synthesis of ChatGPT image reviews counts 34 public sources from 31 March 2025 to 27 September 2026. Trustpilot gives 18, Reddit and YouTube 5 each and G2 4, with 1 press review and 1 newsletter. Most reviews on Trustpilot’s image-filtered page give its lowest rating, and most G2 reviews cover ChatGPT in general.
Image limits lead, in 8 of 34 sources. Users say limits are never shown, move from day to day and count failed images (Trustpilot, reviews of 1 and 3 September 2026).
Edits that ignore instructions follow, in 7 of 34. Parts that should stay fixed change; one reviewer lost hours on a single product image (Trustpilot, reviews of 10 and 18 September 2026).
On output, 5 of 34 say GPT Image makes a static ad quickly from a product link or photo, or from a reference ad. Those sources run it in ChatGPT and in other apps (Reddit, YouTube). One r/canva user: “it does in 5 seconds what it would take me days on Canva”.
Images 2.0 is ChatGPT’s name for GPT Image 2, launched on 21 April 2026 (changelog). Since then, 2 of 34 find its headlines and labels legible and correctly spelled (TechCrunch, YouTube).

Questions buyers ask about ChatGPT images
How many images can I make on ChatGPT Plus?
OpenAI publishes no number. The Plus card promises “More complex and accurate image creation”.
Can I use ChatGPT images commercially?
Yes. The terms assign you the output; the sharing policy asks for an AI label on social media posts.
Does ChatGPT add a watermark to images?
Sometimes, invisibly: OpenAI’s check looks for C2PA metadata and a SynthID watermark, and not all its images carry one.
