Microsoft books $10 billion from OpenAI in a quarter

OpenAI now brings in about 11 per cent of Microsoft’s revenue, and owes it $7.2 billion, the company’s filing shows.

Microsoft’s quarterly filing puts its revenue from OpenAI in the July-to-September quarter of 2026 at $10 billion, a total that counts revenue-sharing payments alongside its other commercial deals with the AI lab. That is close to 11 per cent of Microsoft’s $92.3 billion revenue for the quarter, TechCrunch reports. For the full year to June, the figure was $24.1 billion.

OpenAI also owed Microsoft $7.2 billion at the end of September, up from $6 billion in June. Microsoft discloses the numbers because it owns enough of OpenAI, about 24 per cent, to count it as a related party, 24/7 Wall St. explains. The filing does not say how much came from Azure cloud services and how much from revenue sharing.

Under an April 2026 agreement, OpenAI hands Microsoft a share of its revenue until 2030, up to a cap; that followed an October 2025 deal that freed OpenAI to work with rival cloud providers in exchange for a pledge to spend another $250 billion on Azure.

OpenAI’s own prices feed the revenue-sharing part of that figure. Our 31 October check lists GPT Image 2 on its API at $0.006, $0.053 and $0.211 per square image at low, medium and high quality.

Because OpenAI keeps sharing revenue with Microsoft until 2030, up to a cap, some of what an ad team pays for GPT Image 2 on OpenAI’s API can end up in the $10 billion a quarter Microsoft now reports from OpenAI.
