Musk says Grok Bot cost too much as users hit weekly caps
Subscribers found their weekly Grok Bot allowance used up over the Halloween weekend; Musk said serving costs had outrun revenue.
Some subscribers to Grok Bot, the AI agent run by SpaceX’s AI division, woke up over the Halloween weekend to find their weekly allowance already used up, in some cases jumping from about half to full overnight. Replying to a user on X on Sunday 1 November 2026, Elon Musk pointed to cost: “The cost of serving Grok Bot was unsustainably high relative to revenue,” he wrote, TechCrunch reports.
Musk has not said how limits will work from here. Several users saw their quotas cut in half, The Telegraph reported, according to The Decoder, and that quota is shared: Grok Bot, an agent that can log into accounts, reply to emails and browse sites for you, draws on the same allowance as the Grok assistant and the coding tool Cursor. Asked by one user, Musk wondered whether a larger plan cost too much.
The agent has been sold as a growth story. By SpaceX president Gwynne Shotwell’s count in early October, 800,000 people a week were paying for it, The Decoder says, and Musk recently called it the fastest-growing product he has seen. SpaceX’s filing showed AI at 52 per cent of income and a $431 million profit for the division, TechCrunch notes.
Video from the same company is sold differently. xAI’s API lists Grok Imagine Video 1.5 at $0.08 a second at 480p and $0.25 at 1080p on our 31 October check, metered per second, while the consumer Grok plans render only in a browser and are not on our sheet.
A team making Grok video for ads through the API pays the published per-second rates we recorded on 31 October, whereas the Grok Bot quota subscribers lost came with no warning and no stated new size.
