ChatGPT and Codex move to one shared usage allowance

OpenAI told subscribers it will merge the desktop app’s Chat and Work tabs and count ChatGPT and Codex use against a single pool.

OpenAI is folding the Chat and Work tabs of the ChatGPT desktop app into one, and usage of ChatGPT and Codex, its coding agent, will count against a single allowance. The company set out both changes in an email to users on 2 November 2026, TechCrunch reports. The merged screen goes to a small group first for feedback, and Codex keeps its own section of the app.

OpenAI pitches the merged screen as one place to go from an idea to a finished job, such as a task on the web, a presentation or a website, with your files and plugins pulled in. So far Codex, Work and Chat have each kept their own counter, and uploads, voice and images carry caps of their own, Trending Topics notes. OpenAI says most people will not wait for resets more often, though heavy users of advanced models may.

Running out leaves three choices: buy credits, move to a bigger plan or wait for the refill, whose timing a Settings page will show next to the balance left. The fast default model, Instant, stays unlimited and does not count against the pool. A notice at checkout had already told some subscribers that the shared ChatGPT and Codex limit would start in December.

The size of that pool is set by the plan. When we read chatgpt.com on 31 October, Pro was sold “From” a starting price with three usage tiers, with amounts that render by region (our price sheet).

Once the shared pool arrives, whichever of the three Pro usage tiers a team chooses will have to cover chat, Work tasks and Codex together, where until now each ran on its own counter.
