Static vs dynamic ads

By Alexandre S. Published Last checked What changed

A static ad is one fixed image with copy. A dynamic ad changes per viewer or placement, built from assets or a product feed you supply. On Meta, “dynamic” names three different things. Only one of them works from a feed (Meta’s Help Center: ad volume page read 26 September 2026, Advantage+ creative page capture of 21 September 2026).

Pages ranking for this query define dynamic ads as display ads fed by a product catalogue. AdRoll’s and SmartyAds’ do (search of 2 October 2026). That covers Meta’s catalogue ads and leaves out the two options Meta advertisers meet most when they test creative.

Format What changes per viewer What you supply Where Meta offers it
Static ad single image Nothing, unless Advantage+ creative enhancements are on One image, primary text, headline Standard single-image format
Advantage+ catalog ads catalogue ads The products shown, filled from your feed A product catalogue and an ad template Sales and other catalogue campaigns
Dynamic creative option ad set setting The mix of your images, videos and text Up to 10 creative assets and text options “May be unavailable” for new Sales and App promotion ad sets since June 2024
Flexible ad format ad setting Which of your assets shows, and in what format Groups of images and videos, with text options Meta’s ad volume page points to it in place of dynamic creative

What is a static ad?

A static ad is a single still image, with the primary text, headline and button the platform places around it.

A typical example: a product shot on a plain background, the offer set in large type across the top and a “Shop now” button underneath. Advertisers use statics for a single offer, a new message or a price point, since the reader takes in the whole ad at a glance.

One catch on Meta: a static can stop being static after upload. Meta’s Advantage+ creative page (Wayback capture of 21 September 2026) lists Add animation, which turns “eligible images” into “short, engaging videos”, and visual touch-ups, which expand “static single-image ads” with generated pixels. “Some enhancements may be turned on by default”, the page adds. Meta Advantage+ creative lists every enhancement and its switch.

What “dynamic” means on Meta: catalogue ads, dynamic creative and flexible ads

Dynamic ads on Meta are three formats with one word in common. Each needs something different from you.

Advantage+ catalog ads

Catalogue ads build each ad from a product feed. Meta’s developer guide describes an ad template filled with product information from a data feed, so one set-up makes an ad for every product. Meta’s Advantage+ creative page adds catalogue-only enhancements: dynamic overlays that show “prices or discounts” from your catalogue, and background generation that creates “diverse versions of your product images”.

You supply the catalogue and keep it accurate, and this is the format the display-advertising definitions describe.

The dynamic creative option

The dynamic creative option takes several images, videos and text lines and lets Meta combine them in one ad. Meta’s ad volume page recommends it “if testing multiple creative variants” and says one ad can hold “up to 10” creative assets. Delivery tries to “find the best creative to deliver for a given user”.

Since June 2024, the same page says, dynamic creative may be unavailable for new sales or app promotion ad sets (read 26 September 2026). It points to the flexible ad format instead.

Flexible ad format

Meta’s ad volume page points new Sales and App promotion ad sets to the flexible ad format. It names it as the route for several variants where dynamic creative is unavailable.

Jon Loomer’s guide to the format (read 2 October 2026) describes it as an ad-level choice, against dynamic creative’s ad set level. He reports groups of up to 10 creatives, several flexible ads per ad set, and no compatibility with product catalogues.

So on a new Sales ad set, someone saying “dynamic creative” often means flexible ads.

Dynamic creative testing on Meta: what it shows and what it does not

Dynamic creative testing shows which assets Meta chose to deliver more. It does not show which asset caused a lower CPA, because the comparison is never controlled.

Both the dynamic creative option and flexible ads pick combinations per viewer. Meta’s pages on both formats promise no equal spend per asset and no confidence level. The asset with the most impressions is the one delivery favoured.

For a cause, use Meta’s A/B test. Its A/B testing page splits the audience so nobody sees both versions, with “the same budget for both versions”. It reports a winner “with a certain confidence percentage” (Meta’s winner page).

Use the mixed formats once the question is which asset to serve, and the A/B test while the question is why one wins. Our creative testing framework sets out the routes and the budget maths. The creative testing template turns a test into one row with its spend worked out. Tools that report on running creative are in AI creative testing tools.

When a static ad fits, and when a dynamic one does

Pick by the job each format does. No Meta page read for this guide compares their performance.

Format by job, from what each format does on Meta
Job Format that fits Why
One offer or a new message Static ad The whole message reads at a glance and nothing changes it per viewer
A large product range Advantage+ catalog ads One template covers every product in the feed
Knowing which change worked Static or video variants in an A/B test Meta’s A/B test splits the audience and reports a confidence percentage
Several assets, best one served Flexible ad format Delivery picks the asset per viewer; dynamic creative where still offered
One asset across placements Static with placement fitting Visual touch-ups expand a single image to other ratios when switched on

Two statics can differ in one element only, which suits a test row. A dynamic format mixes several elements by design.

What a static ad costs to make with AI

AI image tools make a static for cents of plan credit at list price. Our static ads hub works out each tool’s cost per image from its official plans.

22 of 1,873 AI-creative Reddit posts in our Arctic Shift pull (23 September 2026) mention statics in the title or excerpt.

One r/PPC thread (22 July 2026) asks what people pay per static creative. Its author, a solo founder spending about $4,000 a month on Meta, says freelance statics cost $45 to $60 a creative early in 2025.

Meta also generates statics inside Ads Manager, through Advantage+ creative’s image generation. Its terms keep that output on Meta’s platforms, which Meta Advantage+ creative quotes.
