Big websites shut the door on AI agents, The Verge finds

Delta, JPMorgan Chase and Charles Schwab block the assistants that book and buy for users, and anti-bot checks stop many more.

More big websites are turning away AI agents, the assistants that browse, book and buy on someone’s behalf, The Verge reported on Saturday 17 October 2026. Delta Air Lines stops them booking tickets. Two banks, JPMorgan Chase and Charles Schwab, say security is why agents cannot open customer accounts. Yelp charges for entry: an agent needs a paid data licence to use the site, it told TechCrunch, The Verge adds.

People using Grok, Dots, Instinct’s agent and Meta’s Muse say other sites stop their agents too. Amazon told Meta that Muse’s access breaks its site policies, and users report that Grok, Dots and Instinct cannot use Amazon either, The Verge says.

Some blocks are accidental. Checks built to stop scammers and spam bots catch agents too. Walmart, a Muse partner, told TechCrunch it never meant to stop agent checkouts. TechCrunch points to a click-to-prove-you’re-human button as the likely snag.

“Turning away a personal agent means turning away the customer behind it,” Meta says. It has signed up retailers such as Walmart, Gap, Sephora and Best Buy so Muse can shop on their sites, The Verge reports.

If you sell online, decide whether agents may complete a purchase on your store, then check that your bot protection matches that decision.
