Canva launches Craft, an image model trained on its templates

Canva’s first in-house image model plans a layout before drawing it, and entered DesignArena’s crowdsourced leaderboard in fourth place, Canva says.

Canva has released Craft, the first image model built from scratch by Canva Research, its in-house AI lab. It is live in the Canva editor and open to developers through Canva’s public API, the company announced on Thursday 22 October 2026 (its newsroom dates the post 23 October).

Most image models turn a prompt straight into pixels. Craft splits the job in two: a planning model first writes out the picture, listing each element with its position, size and any lettering it carries, then a rendering model draws that plan at up to 2K in more than 30 aspect ratios. Canva says the plan keeps text legible and lets you change one element without redrawing the rest.

Canva says its training leans on design: millions of human-made templates from its library, from social posts and menus to posters. On DesignArena, a crowdsourced leaderboard for AI design, Craft entered fourth, behind three OpenAI image models, The Verge reports.

Canva publishes no per-image price for Craft. On our image price sheet, Google’s Nano Banana 2.1 costs $0.0504 per 2K image through its API (checked 23 October) and FLUX 3 Image $0.10 (read 15 October). Canva’s terms of use forbid using its service for performance benchmarking, so Craft has no place in our image generator rankings.

Canva trained Craft on its own templates and built it to plan the lettering before it draws, so offer banners and carousel cards are the ad formats it is designed for.
