Xbox sets up a lab after a wave of AI-built game ports
Xbox’s chief says fan projects that rebuild old games for browsers and Macs are good for players, even when they upset Xbox’s business models.
Xbox chief executive Asha Sharma announced Xbox Labs on Tuesday 13 October 2026. The small in-house team builds experiments in public and counts success in players and creators, GamesIndustry.biz reports. She links the move to a recent burst of fan projects that strip old games down to their code and rebuild them for other hardware, often with AI’s help.
Recent examples include Windows games running on Macs with Apple’s own chips, games playing in a web browser, and mashups that splice one game’s code into another, The Verge reports. Sharma calls the results a win for players, including when they cut against how Xbox makes money. She argues that games suit AI agents the way code does, and says people spend more than 72 billion hours a year playing Xbox games.
A spokesperson told GamesIndustry.biz that the lab has no order to use AI and no new hires: it gathers existing projects, such as browser versions of games. The original Halo now runs in a browser with 128 players, Polygon notes. In February, Sharma had promised that Xbox would not flood its platform with “soulless AI slop”, Polygon adds.
For game marketers, Xbox now treats fan-made AI ports as a source of product ideas worth a team of their own.
