Stagwell buys Freestar and says its AI agents will use it
The agency group now owns a company that sells publishers’ ad space, next to a marketplace its AI agents already buy from.
Stagwell, the marketing group, said on 26 October 2026 that it is buying Freestar, which sells ad space for publishers such as Fortune Media and Boston Globe Media through automated online auctions (programmatic advertising). PPC Land reports that no price was given. Freestar joins Stagwell’s Owned Media unit, and PPC Land quotes the announcement’s AI line: Stagwell says it delivers quality inventory to the right audiences “through agentic decisioning, powered by the Stagwell AI Media Machine”.
Stagwell’s agencies spend brands’ money on ads. Now the group also owns a company paid to sell them. Freestar lands next to Curate, Stagwell’s own marketplace since July, where publishers’ ad slots are bundled before any auction and the group’s AI agents buy directly, Digiday reports. Digiday’s wider point: the big agency groups want their buying agents on systems they own. PPC Land notes that the announcement describes no firewall between Stagwell’s buying and selling sides.
Agents are already the main AI topic among ad buyers. Of 460 posts about AI on Reddit’s r/PPC forum in the year to 23 September 2026, 272 are about agents or MCP, the standard that lets an AI assistant work inside other software, per our list of AI tools for media buyers.
If Stagwell’s agents send spend through a seller the group owns, Stagwell can earn on both sides of one trade. That is the spend investor Ciaran O’Kane, speaking to Digiday, expects clients to question.
