TikTok’s automated keywords run by default for small advertisers

TikTok’s system writes extra keywords from your ad creatives, on by default for small accounts, and sends no notice when it adds one.

If you run search ads on TikTok from a small account, the setting that adds keywords for you starts switched on. Search Engine Journal’s 6 November 2026 comparison with Google Ads lists one setting as a paid search manager’s second check: Automated Keywords, on by default for small and medium businesses and off for the larger clients TikTok calls key accounts, under a help page dated March 2026.

TikTok’s help page says the system reads your ads’ product details, text, images and videos to write these keywords, and it needs at least one keyword from you to start. New additions arrive with no notification. Your reports show one combined line for all of them, plus a dropdown of the ten that spent most. A search can also match your ad with no keyword behind it, and the report can then show the term as “unknown”.

TikTok’s internal trials say the feature can add 10% more conversions while holding to cost targets. Our 3 November story covered its keyword packs, also machine-built. TikTok rates each keyword and creative as a pair for how well they fit, Search Engine Journal notes from its optimisation guide.

That scoring ties search results to creative that fits each keyword theme, so production becomes part of search work. On our TikTok ads tools page, Creatify Standard is $15 a month for 55 credits and lists an Ad Launcher for TikTok, our 6 November check. The terms for Symphony, TikTok’s own AI creative suite, sit behind a login, so we record its ad rights as unclear.

The keywords come from your creative, so a new video can widen where your money goes with no alert. On a small account, that change surfaces after the fact, in campaign reporting and the search terms report.
