Verdict on Runpod

Runpod suits marketers who run open models such as Wan 2.2 or FLUX themselves and pay by the second for GPU time. On our own RTX 4090 Pod, one 1280 by 1280 FLUX image cost about $0.01 of GPU time at prices checked . But 13 of 48 user sources report popular GPUs they could not get (Trustpilot, Reddit).

What Runpod is, in plain words

Runpod rents graphics cards by the second. A graphics card (GPU) is the chip that does the heavy maths behind AI images and video. Its memory (VRAM) decides which models fit on it. You rent one inside a Pod: a computer in Runpod’s cloud that bills while it runs.

You start a Pod from a template, a ready-made setup with the software already installed. Runpod lists an official ComfyUI template, the node-based app most open image and video models run in, beside community templates for Wan 2.2 and FLUX.

A network volume is a rented hard drive that outlives the Pod. Your models and outputs stay on it when you stop the GPU, so the next session starts without downloading them again. Network volumes attach to Secure Cloud Pods only (network volumes). Ours is a 120 GB volume that holds every ComfyUI model we use.

Runpod rents the hardware and you pick the model. What you get out depends on that model, and so do your rights over it (see who owns what you make). The Runpod hub gathers every guide we publish on it.

Secure Cloud or Community Cloud?

Runpod sells the same GPU from two pools. Secure Cloud runs in “T3/T4 data centers” with “High redundancy”; Community Cloud runs on “Peer-to-peer providers” whose reliability Runpod’s Choose a Pod page calls “Variable”.

Community Cloud costs less: an RTX 4090 is $0.34 an hour there and $0.89 on Secure Cloud (pricing page). The same page says “Runpod is no longer accepting new hosts for Community Cloud”, so that pool is not growing.

Runpod GPU Cloud pricing page, pod rates per hour: RTX 5090 32 GB at 1.19 US dollars, RTX 4090 24 GB at 0.89, RTX 3090 at 0.50, L4 at 0.59 and RTX A5000 at 0.27

Community Cloud is the cheaper pool for a batch of stills you can rerun. It cannot attach a network volume, though: Runpod offers those on Secure Cloud only (network volumes). Your models download again each session, on the GPU meter.

For a client deadline, or a model library you reuse, pay for Secure Cloud. Even there, one r/RunPod user waited on a server that support said could take up to 24 hours to recover (Reddit).

Pods, Serverless or Public Endpoints?

Runpod runs your work three ways, and each bills differently.

  1. Pods bill by the second while they run, whether you generate or not. This suits a working session in ComfyUI.
  2. Serverless wakes a worker when a request arrives and stops it after 5 idle seconds by default. You pay from worker start to full stop, cold starts included (Serverless pricing). This suits an app or script that sends jobs.
  3. Public Endpoints run models Runpod hosts, priced per request with no setup. A 5-second 720p Wan 2.2 clip costs $0.30 (pricing page).

Two r/RunPod threads from August and September 2026 say their Serverless endpoints never worked (Reddit, Reddit). For a working session in ComfyUI, start with a Pod and stop it when the batch ends.

What Runpod costs for ad images and video

You pay for GPU time and for storage, from a prepaid balance with no subscription. A Pod needs at least one hour’s worth of credits to start, and it stops when the balance hits zero (Pods pricing).

Runpod Deploy a Pod screen listing GPUs with hourly prices, such as H100 SXM at 3.99 dollars, L40S at 1.09 dollars and RTX 5090 at 1.19 dollars, with the ComfyUI 0.35.0 template and a 150 GB disk in the summary
The GPU picker on 24 October 2026: each card shows memory and price per hour; the ComfyUI template defaults to a 150 GB disk Runpod GPU picker with hourly prices and the ComfyUI template selected, captured

On our own Runpod account, October 2026 cost $11.47 up to the 24th. Of that, $2.21 was network storage. Pods ran in 28 short sessions between 16 and 21 October, each stopped when its job ended. They cost $9.26 in all, $9.19 of it GPU time.

That is the pattern to copy: the storage bill runs all month, the GPU bill runs only while you work. Every rate, the storage tiers and our cost per image are on Runpod pricing; cloud GPU prices sets them beside other GPU clouds.

Who owns what you make on Runpod

Runpod’s terms, last updated 24 March 2026, say in section 5: “We do not assert any ownership over Your Content.” The same section lets Runpod use your content “in an aggregated and anonymized form” to improve its services.

Section 6 bars content for alcohol, “games of chance”, drugs and adult products, so those ad categories are out on Runpod whatever model you run. Section 7 asks for written consent from “each and every identifiable individual person” in your content. Runpod gives no IP indemnity: under section 18, you cover Runpod against claims.

The model’s licence decides the rest:

  • Wan 2.2 is released under Apache 2.0 (model card), which allows commercial use.
  • LTX-2 is free to use, but section 2 of its licence makes entities “with annual revenues of at least” $10,000,000 buy a paid commercial licence.
  • MiniMax H3’s licence, section IV.4, bars its use in the US, the EU, the UK and South Korea. Leave it out of ads for those markets.

What Trustpilot and Reddit users report about Runpod

The 48 sources are 24 Trustpilot reviews (Runpod shows 387 at 3.5) and 24 Reddit threads from r/RunPod and r/comfyui, February to October 2026.

GPU availability leads the complaints. Users describe pods stuck waiting for a card, an RTX 5090 gone from the list for weeks and “no GPU capacity” (13 of 48 sources: Trustpilot, Reddit).

Price rises come second (7 of 48 sources: Reddit, Trustpilot). One r/comfyui thread tracks the RTX 4090 Community rate from $0.34 in January to $0.69 in April. On 24 October it reads $0.34 again.

Lost setup time is third: pods that never work, red ComfyUI nodes, days spent on a first launch (8 of 48 sources: Reddit, Trustpilot).

On the good side, users like renting a high-end card by the second with no hardware to buy (4 of 48 sources: Trustpilot, Reddit).

Fixes for “no instances available” and disconnects

These come from our own Runpod sessions in October 2026, matched to the complaints above.

  • “No instances available” on the ComfyUI template? The template asks for a 150 GB container disk, which often triggers that message. Set it to 50 GB.
  • Still no instances? The template can pin a CUDA version (the GPU driver toolkit). Allow the CUDA version that hosts with a free card run.
  • Paying while you download? Model downloads need no GPU. A 4-vCPU CPU Pod on the same network volume, on Secure Cloud, costs $0.12 an hour.
  • Files gone after a stop? The container disk is erased when a Pod stops (Pods pricing). Keep models and outputs on a network volume on Secure Cloud, the /workspace folder.
  • A bill for idle time? A Pod bills until you stop it, which an r/RunPod user found out on a first top-up (Reddit). Stop it the moment a batch ends.
  • Disconnects on Community Cloud? That pool’s reliability is “Variable” by Runpod’s own table. Move deadline work to Secure Cloud.

Runpod pros and cons

Pros

  • Billed by the second, with no hardware to buy (4 of 48 sources: Trustpilot, Reddit)
  • Quick to set up through the console, the API or an agent (5 of 48 sources: Trustpilot)

Who Runpod suits, and the alternatives

Runpod fits you if you work in ComfyUI, or are learning it, and make enough images or clips that per-credit apps add up. The bill tracks the seconds a card runs, so a disciplined stop habit is worth more than the cheapest card.

A creator sets up Wan 2.2 in ComfyUI on a rented Runpod GPU Video: WAN 2.2 Tutorial: Massive Upgrade to AI Video Generation, Endangered AI on YouTube, .

It also suits creators who train their own models, such as a LoRA for a recurring AI influencer, on a rented card.

It does not fit if you want an ad editor and a monthly plan, or if a client deadline cannot wait for a card. Higgsfield sells Wan, Kling and other models on credits with nothing to install (Higgsfield profile). Runpod’s own Public Endpoints sit between the two.

The full list of other GPU clouds and hosted apps is on Runpod alternatives. To start, how to run ComfyUI on Runpod goes step by step, and Wan 2.2 on Runpod covers video.

Questions buyers ask about Runpod

Is Runpod legit?

Runpod, Inc. publishes its prices and terms. Trustpilot shows 387 reviews at 3.5, and GPU availability is the top complaint (13 of 48 sources).

Is there a Runpod referral code or free credit?

Yes, through a referral link. A new user who signs up with Google and loads $10 gets a one-time credit of $5 to $500, a flat $5 in Europe (referral docs). Runpod referral code has the steps.

Runpod Refer and earn page: a one-time credit from 5 to 500 dollars for both people when a new user signs up with the link and adds 10 dollars, plus credits on their spend for six months
Runpod’s own referral page: the new user and the referrer each get a one-time credit of $5 to $500 once the new user adds $10 Runpod Refer and earn page, captured

Why does Runpod keep disconnecting?

Community Cloud runs on peer-to-peer hosts that Runpod rates “Variable” for reliability. Secure Cloud runs in data centres with “High redundancy”. Move deadline work to Secure Cloud and keep files on a network volume. A lost Pod then costs you minutes, and your models and outputs stay.

Does Runpod have a free trial?

No. A Pod needs at least one hour’s worth of credits to start (Pods pricing); the referral credit is the only bonus.
