A bucket is a price band with an upper limit: “Up to 5,000”, “Up to 10,000”. beehiiv’s get_pricing tool description in pricing.md says a quote rounds up to the next published bucket. So 5,001 subscribers pay the 10,000 price.

Every Lite and Pro bucket

The table below copies beehiiv’s published tiers. The yearly column is the per-month figure beehiiv shows when you pay for the year up front.

Pro costs $50 more than Lite a month at 1,000 subscribers and $170 more at 50,000 (tier table). Enterprise is priced by sales at every size.

Is beehiiv free? What the free plan allows

Yes. The pricing FAQ says Free is “free, forever, with no credit card required”, for up to 2,500 subscribers with unlimited sends (pricing page).

The limits sit in the comparison table. Free gets 1 seat, 1 publication, 1 guest author, 1 custom web page, 3 segments and a 30-day analytics window. Automations, A/B tests, polls, custom HTML and paid subscriptions all start on Lite (pricing.md).

One line on the page contradicts another. The Free card lists “Custom Domains” among its features, while the comparison table marks custom domains from Lite. Plan on Lite if your newsletter needs its own web address.

One reviewer says the free plan’s guest author limit was cut without notice (1 of 19: Trustpilot).

Lite and Pro come with a free trial and no card, and the pricing page gives no trial length. The Ad Network, recommendations, the 0% take rate and extra seats are all marked “not in trial” (pricing.md).

What pushes you to the next tier

The steepest step is the first one. At 2,501 subscribers Free no longer fits, and the bucket above 2,500 is “Up to 5,000”: Lite costs $109 a month there. The bill goes from nothing to that in one subscriber.

After that, each bucket edge adds to the bill. Crossing 25,000 moves Lite from $199 to $299, the biggest single step on the Lite table (tier table).

Inactive readers count. The pricing FAQ counts unique email addresses subscribed to your publication, so an address that never opens but never unsubscribes keeps its place in your bucket. Pruning them takes a segment and an automation, and automations start on Lite.

Lite’s own caps push you to Pro. It allows 10 live automations, 3 publications, 2 seats and 10 segments, and it keeps beehiiv’s branding on your emails and site. Pro lifts all of those and lists 3 Getty Images (the unit is not stated), and Lite is not sold above 100,000 subscribers.

What yearly billing saves

beehiiv advertises yearly savings of up to 20%. The published tiers save less. Across every bucket, paying for the year costs between 12.7% and 16.9% less than twelve monthly payments (tier table).

The best rate is Lite at up to 1,000: $588 a year against $708 paid monthly, a 16.9% saving. The worst is Lite at up to 2,500, at 12.7%. Each saving is one minus the yearly total divided by twelve monthly payments, from the tier table.

Add-ons: seats, SMS and dedicated IPs

The pricing page sells no add-ons. Seats come with the plan: 1 on Free, 2 on Lite, 10 on Pro and unlimited on Enterprise. Want a third editor on Lite? The table lists no seat price, so the answer is Pro.

Dedicated IP addresses, a sending address only your newsletter uses, are Enterprise only. SMS does not appear on the pricing page at all.

Paid subscriptions carry one outside cost. beehiiv takes 0% from Lite up, and Stripe still takes 2.9% plus $0.30 per payment (pricing FAQ). Substack keeps 10% of paid subscription revenue, plus card fees (Substack). beehiiv vs Substack finds the revenue where that share passes a Lite plan.

Which beehiiv plan includes the AI writing assistant

Lite is the first plan with beehiiv AI, the writing assistant inside the editor. Free carries “Limited” AI usage and no assistant.

Pro raises AI usage to “5x Lite”, but the pricing page never says how much Lite’s “Elevated” usage is. The no-training and zero-retention option, and bringing your own AI model key, sit on Enterprise only (pricing.md).

Lite costs $139 a month billed monthly, or $119 a month billed yearly (tier table).

Does beehiiv charge per email sent?

No. The pricing FAQ says every plan, Free included, has unlimited sends; only the subscriber count sets the price.

Is beehiiv Pro worth it over Lite?

Pro pays when you need branding removed, more than 3 publications or more than 10 automations. Otherwise Lite does the same newsletter job for less.
